World of Hand Drumming

Monday students learn to make music with the conga and djembe drums.  Yes we still have a little bit of room for Adult (older teens and up) Beginners in this class.

Hands down this is the best way to learn a musical instrument or to drastically improve your existing musical skill quickly.  Rhythm is the foundation of music-making.  Spend a little time in this class and see for yourself!  Find out how every instrument is a drum and why rhythm is the most transferable musical skill!  At $20 /week (package rate) this class is comparably priced to a 1/2 hour private lesson but instead you get a 1.5 hour total rhythm immersion in red-hot grooves from around the world.  The group’s energy helps you refine your concentration and blending skills while adding an element of celebration.  Feel supported in a fun environment.

Intermediate Hand Drumming

Tuesday students learn authentic, thrilling arrangements for the Djembe drum and the complimentary African bass drums (Dounumba) with a metal bell attached. (Great training for drumset, bass and piano players!)  This class covers more arrangements at faster tempos than the Monday group.  The only pre-requisite for this class is to be able to execute all 3 traditional djembe sounds and to be ready to learn patterns and arrangements.  Most students will repeat the 12 Monday classes more than once before graduating to Tuesdays.  Some students will be ready for the quicker tempos and faster pacing of Tuesdays after only 12 weeks (of Mondays).  If you are a prodigy you can advance to Tuesdays as soon as you know the basics.  If you have previously studied djembe or conga you may be ready to just go into the Tuesday group.  If you are experienced with rhythm or looking for a challenge (highly recommended for piano, drumset and bass players or anyone searching for the heart of syncopated funkyness) then you will love exploring the Dunumba; African bells and bass drums!  Learn about hand independance, ride rhythms, syncopations, governing parts, pitch-bending on bass drums, “saying” your part, “the feet” and more!  Music Workshop’s Tuesday Intermediate Dunumba and Djembe Class!  It’s “where the boom comes from”!  When you’re ready to start digging deep we are ready for you!  “Groove Monster” our Tuesday student group performs (optional for participants) throughout the year at events like Folklore Festival,  New Year’s Eve at Old Fort William and others.

Youth Drum Classes for Kids:

Youth Drum Classes are based on 30+ years of drumming experience and 11 years of development in local schools. This course offers a rhythmic foundation for lifelong music-making. Kids feel successful instantly with specially chosen instruments; Djembe, Conga, Mallets, Marimba, Drum Set and more!

We run two classes on Wednesdays for kids.

7-10 years
Kids classes use African hand and stick drums, Orff marimbas, xylophones and metallophones plus hand percussion and voice.
6:00-7:10pm for 12 weeks. Small classes, limited availability.  Call today!

10-14 years
7:30-8:30 pm for 12 weeks. $180.00

Instrument purchase is not necessary but we can recommend a small drum and take home materials.
