Our kid’s classes use African hand and stick drums, Orff marimbas, xylophones and metallophones plus hand percussion (gongs and sound effects) and voice.

RhythmPlay and RhythmSection are based on 30+ years of drumming experience and 11 years of development in local schools via our “Drumming At School” programs.
This course offers a rhythmic foundation for lifelong music making. Kids feel successful instantly with specially chosen instruments; Djembe, Conga, Mallets, Marimba, Drum Set and more! These instruments use existing coordination skills to get great (and encouraging) musical results from day one.
By not having to worry about tuning, intonation, wrong notes and micro movements we are free to develop fun and musical “bigger picture” concepts like; leading, following, conducting, blending, layering, complimentary parts, musical forms, African and “World” songs, music and movement, music and storytelling and more! This class is really all about falling in love with music making! With that as a foundation a child is ready to enjoy lifelong music making, studying and performing. Too many programs “teach” all the fun out of music. Instead, we focus on enjoying and mastering the process of actual music making and letting those experiences become the catalyst that inspires greater commitment from the child!
This program is built on the same fundamentals that master teacher Karl Orff indentified as the essential foundations in musical cultures world-wide. (Vocal learning, tactile learning, follow the leader and echo imitation, repetition and improvisation.)
We run two classes on Wednesday evenings for kids. Instrument purchase is not necessary but we can recommend a small drum and take home materials.
