Drumming
Workshops with Rick Lazar September 23rd, 2007 in Thunder Bay!
You will think you´ve died and gone to Humber!!
Rick Lazar world-renowned drummer and percussionist (formerly of Thunder Bay!) is coming to town on
Sunday September 23rd to lead three 2 hour workshops open to all local musicians! These workshops
are being hosted and presented by Sean Jesseau and Music Workshop.
Rick is one of Canada's busiest and most influential musicians. Touring and recording regularly with
artists like Bruce Cockburn, Jesse Cook and Loreena Mckennitt and leading groups like Montuno Police and Samba
Squad when he's not teaching at Humber College.
These workshops are built on three of the most exciting rhythm cultures in the world:
- Afro-Brazillian. If you saw the recent documentary on Rick's group Samba Squad you'll
have a sense of how incredibly exciting this music is. This music is the fuel behind the
gigantic Brazillian street carnival parades the have made Brazil famous. Especially
recommended for stick drummers (marching band, drum set or orchestral) with some
experience. Drum set players will see the drum set completely reinvented. Time; 1:30-
3:30 PM.
- Arabic/Middle Eastern. Based primarily on the dunbek drum - the sonic engine behind
the current belly dance craze. Rick's Arabic workshops have been massive hits in
Toronto. Thunder Bay's belly dance community needs more drummers! This is a great
class for dancers to deepen their appreciation of the music they dance to and to become
more confident and adept at recognising and understanding the connections between the
music and the dance. 4-6:00 PM
- West African. The Djembe drum craze is sweeping the world. This drum's popularity has
sky-rocketed in the last ten years. Arguably the most influential rhythm culture in the
whole world West African music has influenced Rock, Rn'B, Jazz, Reggae, Calypso, and Hip
Hop, Ragtime, New Orleans and many more styles. The Djembe has three main sounds
which parallel the bass, snare and tom tom sounds of the modern drum set. Experienced
players will delve deep into the layered grooves of the three African bass drums (or
Dununs). Newbies will solidify their technique on the Djembe. Learn complete
arrangements and soloing concepts. 6:30-8:30PM
Cost for each workshop is $40.00. If you have an appropriate drum (or 2) to bring please bring them!
Bring sticks and bass mallets to the Brazillian workshop. Music Workshop will provide drums if you need
one. Register today! Location To Be Announced.
Rick then plays the Auditorium with Loreena Mckennitt on Sept 24th, 2007.
